The development of Metal Injection Molding(MIM)industry was reviewed.The production methods of MIM powder and some typical MIM processes,which were the two chief fadors affecting the MIM industry of 21st century.

MIM requires fine raw material powder to ensure uniform dispersion, good rheological property and large sintering rate. Therefore, the price of MIM raw material powder is about 10 times that of traditional PM powder, which is a key factor limiting the wide application of MIM technology at present.The ideal MIM powder is powder size 2~8um, loose packing density 40%~50%, shaking density more than 50%;The powder particles are subspherical and larger than the surface.At present, the main methods of producing MIM powder include carbonyl method, high-pressure gas atomization method, ultra-high-pressure water atomization method, plasma atomization method, laminar flow atomization method and powder coating method.
