Tolerance demanding parts can be produced by PIM. However, accompanied with the low productivity and expensive subsequent processing operations, will have a very large effect on the cost of the product. PIM parts in size typically is in line with the normal distribution. Based on statistical analysis, if the tolerance is strict, located within the specified size range of products would be less. Accordingly, it is necessary to separate or through screening products that meet the requirements and can not accept, this additional process would increase the cost. Greater impact on cost is the cost of the products don’t meet the requirements, this part of the cost must be calculated in the last delivery of materials. Zirconia fiber ferrule is an example, reported that in 1000 only 7 parts to meet the requirements. Fortunately, the components of the unit price is high enough(this is the military products, like a toilet seat worth of $600),so this product is still profitable.
All the products by PIM finally will have restrictions in terms of the dimensional accuracy. After sintering the normal distribution of the products size cannot meet strict tolerance requirements. Machining and grinding are the method of correcting the size after sintering, hese processes will increase the cost of the product, but also suitable for allowance to the size of the parts. Another way is to sort out the acceptable product from the rejected products. For tolerances demanding products, products, early communication with PIM vendors is a way to minimize cost.
